APPROACH

Across four to five episodes we show how the two MINI Countryman are designed, built and used, from the designers' intention to the final experience.

Everything about this story exists in opposite pairs: white and black, Paul and Philipp, loud and quiet, crowd and solitude, speaker and headphones.
And yet, despite all these differences, music connects people. These two cars are proof of that.

I’d love for our series to become instantly recognisable in the feed.
My idea would be to create a “mixtape” of films, with every one of them opening in the same way:
A hand pushes a cassette into the car-mounted Walkman, the handwritten label carrying the episode title: "TRACK 01", "TRACK 02". They click play, and the film starts.

Like the cars, the visual language blends the contemporary with the nostalgic, honouring the past while looking forward.

The visuals sit between workshop and open landscape, between machine and human. This creates space for compelling contrasts: brushed aluminium against grease-stained thumbs, SLS print beds beside handwritten cassette labels, etc.

VISUALS

FILM 01 - “SIDE A / SIDE B”

Script

This film introduces the personalities behind the project: Paul and Philipp. A strictly mirrored film about two people who built the same car twice and ended up with two completely different cars.

The white Countryman lives in daylight: open, playful, loud. The black Countryman appears at dusk: reduced, precise, in their own words "böse und elegant." We shoot them performing identical actions in identical framings: Closing a door, turning toward camera, operating the speakers.
While they answer the questions, a feeling of synergy builds, two worlds coming together.

The edit ping pongs between the two sides. The rhythm accelerates until, for the first time in the series, both cars share a single frame, nose to nose.

Questions
  1. Who are you?
  2. How would you describe your relationship with each other?
  3. Describe the other person in three words.
  4. Do you inspire each other?
  5. How do your creative processes differ?
  6. Which car is yours, and why?

FILM 02 - “MAN AND MACHINE”

This film takes us through the design process. As VAGABUND explain how they work, we cut a rhythmic, tactile montage hard to the beat.
The machine world: CAD files on a display, 3D prints, laser cut aluminum for the roof rack, etc.
Versus the manmade world: sanding, taping, a grease stained thumb wiping a fresh print, etc.

All works that we’re able to capture / reenact on the day will be part of this montage.
In this piece we are also actively telling the TÜV story: how a "problem" can be transformed into a recognisable detail, even a signature.

For the more clean “design work” I strongly recommend using the pre existing footage.
Potentially we could ask for all the raw footage that was already shot?
    Script

    1. What is something unusual that inspired you, something not visible at first glance?
    2. What part of each of you, your self expression, can we find in the cars?
    3. What was your favourite part of the design process?
    4. Was there a moment where nothing went to plan?
    5. What do you and MINI have in common?
    Questions

    FILM 03 - “LOUD”

    Script

This is the film about the sound system built into the car, made to entertain the people around it.

The film starts almost uncomfortably quiet: The Countryman stands alone in a silent studio, a macro shot of the speaker follows. Then a single bass hits, and the film smash cuts to the same speaker at full volume on a mountaintop. Crowd, dust, headlights through haze. An epic party.
Hard cut back to the silent workshop: Philipp and Paul grin into the camera and keep answering our questions, explaining the idea, while we cut away to show its effect: people dancing on the roof rack, crowded around the speaker, the car as the centerpiece of a rave.e.

We use the visual effect of a “spin”, like a cassette tape or a vinyl, as an inspiration for camera movements as well.

      Questions
      1. Why build a sound system into a car, facing outward?
      2. How would you like people to use your cars?
      3. Do you organise parties yourselves?

      FILM 04 - “QUIET”

After the party. The same mountaintop or warehouse, now empty. Cable runs, cups, the leftover silence of a party that ended hours ago. Paul walks to the other side of the car, the side without the speakers.
Philipp already sits there, looking into the distance, listening to a cassette on the Walkman.

In flashbacks we jump back to the party mayhem of the night before. The final wide holds on the two guys, the two cars, and an enormous landscape, nodding along to music nobody else can hear.
        Script

        1. Why the Walkman? How did you get the idea?
        2. What's your connection to music?
        3. When do you listen to music completely alone?
        4. What was a music moment in your life you'll never forget?
        5. Why a cassette, why not just Spotify?
        Questions

        FILM 05 - “GOODWOOD”

In this film, we take the car out into the real world and capture its impact on real people. Shot in an event-style documentary format, we follow the car throughout the Festival of Speed. People walk up to it, take photos, share reactions, and spend time around it.
The focus is on genuine moments and authentic engagement, showing how the car naturally draws attention and creates excitement.

At the heart of it all are Paul and Philipp, watching people interact with their creation and enjoying the moment as their vision comes to life.
A simple proof-of-concept film that demonstrates not just the car itself, but its effect on the people around it.
